Hope When You Can’t Catch a Break

When you can’t catch a break, take a new grip with your tired hands onto hope.

Many people begin the New Year with the mantra “New Year, New You.” I’m not one of those people. It sounds idyllic, but with all the commotion of family gatherings, cleaning, shopping, preparing, and cooking, I want to enter the New Year in my comfortable flannel pajamas and fuzzy socks.

Who am I kidding? I wear flannel pajamas all year round.

Please tell me I’m not the only one. Not about the flannel pajamas (although you might and if you are, we’re even better friends than I thought) but about feeling too worn out in January.

You feel it too, right? I knew I wasn’t the only one. So what do we do when it’s mid-January and the only thing we catch is a cold or the other dreaded C word?

The author of Hebrews suggests we “take a new grip with our tired hands and strengthen our weak knees” (Hebrews 12:12 NLT) and suggest, my friends, that we grasp hope. If you can’t catch a break, grab hold of these hope-filled promises. These words of encouragement as better than flannel pajamas and fuzzy socks on a cold Winter’s Day.

7 Hope Filled Promises

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” (Psalm 34:18 NLT)

“My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” (Psalm 63:8 ESV)

“He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” (Psalm 91:4 NLT)

“Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10 NASB)

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4 NASB)

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” (1 Peter 5:10 NIV)

“At the right time, I the Lord will make it happen.” (Isaiah 60:22 NLT)

God has a sense of humor. While editing this article, the school nurse called with the news my daughter has been exposed to someone with the dreaded word.  An email from my daughter’s teacher said, “You guys can’t catch a break.” She nailed it! Thus, the perfect title for this article. When you can’t catch a break, we can catch “a new grip with our tired hands and strengthen our weak knees” (Hebrews 12:12 NLT)
