“April, how can I specifically pray for you?” I love those who have the courage to ask such bold questions; friends who aren’t afraid to step beyond the threshold of superficial friendship and into my messy life.

I answered, “Please pray for God to bless my perspective. Also pray that I continue to learn to trust God.”

I reciprocated the same question, “How may I specifically pray for you?” Her reply, “April, please pray that I may listen to God’s voice and direction.”

We continued to talk while observing our sons’ indoor soccer game. The words pray, listen, and trust ricocheted in my mind, like the ball bouncing off the gym walls of the game.

Trust is my word for 2016 and listen is my friend’s desire for the New Year.

I love studying words; their use, original meaning, and language. Here is some interesting Bible facts about the frequency of the words listen, pray, and trust in the Bible:

The moral of the story, is that we should be listening for God’s voice slightly more than we pray. We should also rely on listening to His voice twice as often to trust in his guidance and plan.

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing from the word of God.” (Romans 10:17, AKJV)

Do you have a word or phrase that keeps coming to mind? I’d encourage you to start by searching God’s written Word, the Bible, for uses of that word. A concordance is a great reference to aid in your search. My favorite online sites are www.Biblegateway.com, www.Biblehub.com, and www.BlueLetterBible.org.

Take your time investigating this word or phrase. Dig deep and examine the root word, native language, and meaning. Buried treasure is bound to be found for anyone willing to participate in an archaeological dig in God’s Word.

“I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret place, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.” (Isaiah 45:3, NIV)

I’d love to hear what you’ve unearthed. Happy digging!

~April
