“WHO AM I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family,
that you have brought me THIS FAR?
– 2 Samuel 7:18
I am having a “This far moment”. I am currently studying the life of King David and for the past week I’ve been pondering David’s prayer…Who am I…that you have brought me this far? David, runt-of-the-litter among his older and athletic brothers. David, a lowly shepherd, the most menial job in all the land. David, hand chosen by God to be the greatest King over all the land. David was just told his kingdom will be established forever (direct family line to Jesus) and his response was “Who am I, O Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?”
I take a break in my bible study to really ponder the meaning of who am I…this far. I pick up the book “The Power of a Praying Wife” and read/pray over a specific area for my love. I notice a receipt acting as a book mark. I recognize it as the sales receipt to that book dated 2/23/02. I ponder that date and where we were in our lives. Hmm that was before kids…and we were getting ready to close on our current house.
So many things I didn’t know back then. Tears slip down my cheeks as my mind is flooded with situations, struggles, answers to prayers, and cries of help from the past 10 years. On that date of 2/23/02 I didn’t know I would be pregnant in 3 months, struggle with depression for 2 years, learn the power of prayer, overcome depression by God’s word alone, deal with family drama, our reputation questioned, deliver our second child, experience the pain of illness and death of loved ones, struggle with relationships and betrayal, and learn to surrender to God.
As I go back and reread my prayer journals from 2002 to present, I see how God has answered my prayers! Some prayers and situatations I don’t even remember. I can’t help but wonder that else I can add to my “this far” list when I look at this sale receipt another 10 years from now. Unable to stop the tears, I understand the weight of David’s words.
